Commencement of PDC/ PFDC

The national Committee on the Use of Plastics in Agriculture sanctioned the Plasticulture Development Centre at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat in 1988 vide letter no. NCPA/326/ dated. 17 Dec. 1988 and it is in operation since 1989. During this period, the center has made a breakthrough in generating technologies such as standardization of the design of naturally ventilated polyhouse cum rainshelter for off-season vegetable and flower production in Assam, use of poly tunnel for raising of Boro or early Ahu seedling during winter months, use of plastic mulches in vegetable and fruit production as well as experiments on drip irrigation and fertigation in different horticultural crops.
The center has been conducting four farmers and two officers trainings for whole N.E. states each year.
Since inception the center was under the Deptt. of Agronomy, however subsequently, in the year 1999, it was transferred to the Deptt. of Horticulture.
