Indira Gandhi Agricultural University (IGAU),
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) is a State Agricultural University. It came in to
existence on January 20, 1987 through the Madhya Pradesh Act No. 20, 1987,
carved out of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur
amalgamating its constituents situated in 6 districts of Chhattisgarh
region. Chhattisgarh state, which itself came into existence on 1st November
2000, now has 16 District and is bounded by Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand,
Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh. Covering a geographical
area of 13.5 million hectares, it is predominately a tribal state heaving
44% of tribal and backward population. The total population is about 2.2
million out of which 31.7% are schedule tribes and 11.1% are schedule
castes. At present, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University is the only
State Agricultural University in Chhattisgarh. It has four faculties viz.
Agriculture, Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Dairy Technology,
and Agricultural Engineering. Agriculture faculty has 13 departments viz.
Agronomy, Plant Breeding / Genetics, Soil Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology,
Horticulture, Agricultural & Natural Resource Economics, Land &
Water Management, Agricultural Extension, Mathematics and Agricultural
Statistics, Physics & Agrometerology, Fishery, and Forestry. Teaching,
research and extension in these subjects in being carried as per the mandate
of the University Teaching both UG and PG level is being conducted at
the 6 affiliated collages of University. Department of Horticulture has
facilities for teaching and specialization at Post-graduate and Doctoral
level. Some of the projects operative in the Department of Horticulture
are AICRIP on, Vegetable Improvement, Potato Improvement, Tuber crops,
Cashew, Palm and Spices, Ad-hoc project on Litchi, as well as NATP besides
PFDC is also operative in this department.
