Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is one of the leading agrotechnology
providers of India and its graduates are recognized throughout
the world. Though the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU)
came into being on June 1, 1971, it had its genesis from establishment
of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu as
early as 1868, which was later relocated at Coimbatore. TNAU,
in realizing its mission of 'Uplifting economic conditions of
farming community and helping the associated agribusinesses' continued
to perform the triple functions of education, research and extension
in Agriculture and in the process, it won the "Best Agricultural
University Award" for the year 1998 from ICAR.
The University is offering Eight Undergraduate Degree Programmes
and Twenty one Postgraduate Degree Programs in the faculties of
Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Forestry
and Home Science with 10 Colleges distributed in seven campuses
all over Tamil Nadu. Besides, the university has 32 Research Stations
for agrotechnology development. These research stations concentrate
on the location specific researches on Agricultural and Horticultural
crops so as to tackle the problems confronted by the farmers of
the concerned zones in particular and the state in general.
At present, 445 research schemes/projects are in operation funded
by GOI, ICAR, Private agencies, International Agencies, Govt.
of Tamil Nadu and other agencies.
